Meet the Governors

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Please find below details of how our Governing body is structured, including the names, categories, responsibilities and terms of appointment for each Governor.  We have also provided a Register of Governor Interests and an Annual Statement of Issues for your information.  As from September 2015, following the reconstitution all members are elected for a 4 year term of office.

Our Governor's can be contacted on the following email address: governors@polygon.southampton.sch.uk

Parent Governor Vacancies - we need you!

November 2018

To all Parents and Carers

As a school, our Governing Body includes people from within and outside our school community, and it is very important that parents are included on the Board. We have an efficient and supportive Governing Body, but we do have space for two new parent governors and would like to invite you to consider joining the Board.

What does being a Governor involve?

The governing board provides strategic leadership and accountability in schools. It has three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

Governors or trustees set the aims and objectives for the school or group of schools and set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. In action, this means:

  • Appointing and performance reviewing the head teacher and senior leaders, including making decisions about pay
  • Managing budgets and deciding how money is spent
  • Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the school community
  • Sitting on panels and making decisions about things like pupil exclusions and staff disciplinary
  • Addressing a range of education issues within the school including disadvantaged pupils, pupils with special needs, staff workload and teacher recruitment
  • Looking at data and evidence to ask questions and have challenging conversations about the school

Anyone aged over 18 can be a governor or trustee (but there are some exceptions – please see below). There is no requirement for you to have an understanding of the education system, just the necessary skills, character and time to contribute.

Full Governing Body meetings take place half termly and dates are planned a year in advance. There are also committee meetings for Finance & Resources, and Curriculum and Standards to discuss these particular aspects of the school, but joining one of these committees is optional. Being a Governor is a role which is rewarding, an excellent opportunity to develop existing skills and helps to shape and develop our school. More information about the role of school governors can be found here: https://www.nga.org.uk/Be-a-Governor.aspx

If you would like to apply, I have attached the application form which needs to be returned to the school office marked for my attention. The closing date for applications is 26 November. If we do have more than one application, a ballot of all parents will be held.

Yours faithfully,

Liz Irving

Clerk to the Governing Body
