Healthy High Five
Healthy High 5 at The Polygon
The Healthy High 5 Award was launched in Southampton to make it easier for schools to provide healthy and fun activities for all pupils to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
The Healthy High 5 Award has five achievable elements (stars) designed to have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of all school pupils.
- Physical Activity
- Mindfulness
- Water beats fizzy/energy drinks
- Shorter queues for healthier lunches
- Love your lungs (Life Lab)
These goals/stars will also link in with Life Lab, a service provided at Southampton General Hospital to help educate young people about lifelong health There are three levels of the award: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
We are currently the only secondary school in Southampton to be achieving a GOLD award!
Intent:
The intent of HH5 is to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of all of our pupils in a fun and achievable way. We do this by empowering children to make healthy choices to improve their fitness and general wellbeing. Pupils will also be more confident in themselves and their abilities, and will find suitable activities and techniques to manage their own physical and mental health.
Implementation:
- Pupils are given opportunities to try different physical and mental wellbeing exercises in a safe environment.
- Pupils are taught that mental and physical health are as important as each other.
- Pupils are given opportunities to express themselves and are allowed to share their views and opinions on what activities they do in these sessions.
- Cross curricular opportunities within school (personal development and HH5 go hand-in hand and our pupils are given a vast amount of personal development opportunities during their time at The Polygon)
- Qualified and trained staff who have regular CPD
- Consistency in expectations of behaviour management in line with school policy
- A range of professionals who come into school regularly to given pupils further opportunities to develop their skills.
- All children have access to the school gym where they can build up their strength and stamina.
Impact:
We expect positive outcomes for pupils and hope to see an increase in participation levels and engagement across the curriculum. Positive progress can be monitored through attendance, emotional literacy data and our points system. We expect to see pupils enjoying different types of physical exercises and learning way to manage their wellbeing that suits them as individuals. Pupils will be more self-aware and have the confidence to try new activities in and outside of school.
